Buddhist Funeral Services

Buddhist funerals are typically held over 3, 5 or 7 days because these are considered as complete numbers in Buddhist beliefs.

The setup for the funeral parlour for a Buddhist funeral will include an altar for the departed. On this altar a photo of the departed is displayed along with flowers, fruits and vegetarian offerings. The altar will also have candles and an incense burner for the family and guests to offer joss sticks.

In addition, another altar will be setup for Buddhist monks to chant sutras for the departed to ensure that they are reborn into Amitabha's pure land so as to eventually attain nirvana.

A statue of Dizhang Wang Bodhisattva, Amitabha Buddha or Guanyin Bodhisattva is commonly displayed at the prayer altar. They are symbols of Pure Land Buddhism.

A Buddhist monk will offer prayers on the first day when the departed is placed into the casket, this is known as encoffinment. Buddhist monks will then offer prayers on the day prior to the funeral, this is when the main ceremonial rituals for a Buddhist funeral takes place. Finally, a Buddhist monk will offer up prayers right before the deceased leaves the parlour for the crematorium

Cremation has been practiced by Buddhists since the time of the first Buddha. Once the ashes have been collected, they are placed in an urn and interned into a columbarium niche, a Buddhist monk will be present for this ritual as well.
